AVIF vs GIF
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) was published by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019. It stores images with the AV1 video codec, supporting millions of colours, HDR, full alpha transparency and animation — at a small fraction of a GIF’s size. GIF, by contrast, works literally everywhere, including old software and most email clients.
Converting AVIF to GIF trades efficiency for compatibility: expect the GIF to be noticeably larger and limited to 256 colours per frame. To go the other way and get a modern, compact still, use GIF to AVIF.
If only the first frame converts
Reading the individual frames of an animated AVIF requires the WebCodecs ImageDecoder API. If your browser lacks it, you’ll get a single-frame GIF — open the page in Chrome or Edge to convert the full animation. Similar modern formats are covered by Sticker to GIF (animated WebP) and Images to GIF (APNG and others).
