Common GIF sizes
Different destinations want different sizes: Discord and Slack emoji look best at 128×128 (Discord allows emoji up to 256 KB); chat and social GIFs are typically 480 px wide; website headers and tutorials may need 800–1200 px. Shrinking also makes files much smaller, because size scales roughly with pixel count — halving both sides typically cuts the file to a quarter or a third.
If the shape is wrong rather than the size, crop first, then resize. For square emoji from a wide GIF, crop to 1:1 and resize to 128 px.
Enlarging GIFs
Upscaling can’t add detail, but it’s useful for small pixel art, cursors and sprites. Whole-number scales (200%, 400%) keep pixels evenly sized. For a smaller file at the same dimensions, use the GIF compressor; to fit an exact frame shape, combine resizing with Rotate GIF or Crop GIF.
