Blur or pixelate a GIF

Blur GIF applies a smooth blur or a pixelate (mosaic) effect to an animated GIF — either the whole image or just a rectangle you drag on the preview, such as a face, name, licence plate or email address. The effect is applied to the same area on every frame, with strength from 2 to 60 pixels, entirely in your browser.

Hiding sensitive information properly

For privacy, strength matters: a light blur on large text can still be readable. Use a strength of at least 15–20 px for text, or pixelate with large blocks. Remember the area is fixed — if the thing you’re hiding moves across the GIF, draw the box large enough to cover its whole path, or trim to the part where it stays put.

Because processing happens on your device, the unblurred original is never sent anywhere — important when the GIF contains screen recordings of emails, dashboards or documents made with the GIF Recorder.

Creative blur

Blurring the whole GIF lightly creates a dreamy background for text overlays — blur, then add text. To remove distractions at the edges instead, crop. For colour effects, see GIF Filters.

Blur GIF FAQ

How do I blur part of a GIF?

Upload the GIF, keep “Selected area” on, drag a box over the part to hide, set the strength and click Blur GIF.

Can I pixelate a face in a GIF?

Yes. Choose Pixelate, select the face and pick a block size large enough that it can’t be recognised.

Does the blur follow moving objects?

No. The same rectangle is covered on every frame, so make it large enough to cover the object’s whole movement.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. GifRush processes everything locally in your browser using JavaScript, Canvas, Web Workers and WebCodecs. Your files never leave your device, and closing the tab discards them.
